ADVICE FROM THE DENTAL NURSE
What advice would you offer to nervous patients?
I believe that even the greatest fear should not prevent you from getting the dental treatment you need. Often the fear that exists in relation to dental procedures is left over from childhood trauma. In our practice, we offer patients conscious sedation. This is really an excellent option for those people who simply cannot overcome their fear of dental treatment. It makes things a lot more bearable and a lot more comfortable.

What’s the worst mistake people make when it comes to oral care?
Many of us neglect our daily activities due to the lack of knowledge and skills necessary for good oral hygiene. For example, a lot of people see bleeding gums and stop brushing, thinking they are doing the right thing – unfortunately nothing could be more wrong. If your gums bleed it’s due to the presence of bacteria which has caused swelling. This is a sign of gum disease and an indication that you’re not brushing enough or not brushing effectively.

Your top tips for healthy teeth and gums?
Use a proper technique to brush: Use only a pea-sized amount of tooth paste, brush in gentle circular movements, ensuring you pay attention to all surfaces. You can use a back and forth motion, lightly on the teeth’s chewing surfaces.
Spend enough time brushing: Spend at least two minutes twice a day.
Floss or use interdental brushes.
Don’t rinse the toothpaste out of your mouth after brushing, just spit. This ensures that the fluoride remains in contact with the enamel thereby protecting your teeth.
Don’t neglect your visits to the dentist and hygienist; regular dental checkups and descaling and polishing by a professional hygienist are the keys to keeping healthy teeth and gums.
